Project Daedalus
A Minecraft Maze Runner recreation: a massive maze with custom game mechanics, trials, and tons of lore.
Project Daedalus is a full Minecraft recreation of Maze Runner, complete with a massive world record breaking maze, timed trials and quests, events, and lore acurate playing.
What it is
Project Daedalus is the work of over 40 individuals, over the course of a few years, starting on December 23 of 2023. It’s aim is to recreate the Maze Runner, written by author James Dashner, in unmodded Minecraft as a multiplayer server. A massive 12km diamater maze fills the world with twists and turns, using custom terrain, foliage, and what everyone comes to see and subsequently run screaming from, the Grievers, the 5-meter tall biomechanical monsters that inhabit the Maze at night. Players are tasked with upkeeping their home by contributing to the community, while trying to find the escape to the prison they are trapped in. Gathering food, attending to the injured, providing resources, and more.
Tech
- The server — The server runs on PaperMC, and is hosted on my own hardware. An impressive number of plugins, datapacks, resource packs, and custom scrips go into running the operation.
- Components — As mentioned above, the sever uses many different methods to add many different features. Programming the main plugin via Java is by far the most powerful, though visuals and easy to edit implementations of features are common in the form of resource packs and datapacks. Tens of thousands of lines of code have gone into making this come together. Code made for this one project.
Current state
Project Daedalus is in the beta testing stage of development, with an open beta in the works.
